Icons of the Cuban Son, with more than seven decades and three generations of history, made their long overdue U.S. debut this past July 9th, at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. Founded by legend Arsenio Rodriguez, this conjunto was led by the (Felix) Chappottin dynasty when the tres player left Cuba for the United States in 1950.

Chappottin renamed the group Conjunto Chappottin y Sus Estrellas. For the remainder of the fifties, the group, featuring vocalist Miguilito Cuni, released hit after hit, and were seen regularly on Cuban television.

The group presently performs under the direction of trumpet player, arranger and musical  director Jesus Angel Chappotín Coto and percussionist/singer Miguel Cuni, Jr.

This July evening, the vintage sound excited members of the crowd, which swelled right up to the edge of the stage, as well as the many enthusiastic dancers.

Being a lover of Cuban music myself, and having only heard their records, I was in heaven, so to speak, when I could finally see, listen and dance to their music--that is when I was not photographing them!  – Allen Spatz
